Winston Churchill’s painting sold for more than £8 million
The Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque painting was sold for £8,285 million at Christie’s on the 1st of March, despite its worth being estimated as being between £1,5 and £2,5 million by the auction house.
Angelina Jolie put up Winston Churchill’s painting for auction. It is said she received it from Brad Pitt as a gift in 2011, while they were dating.
The Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque was painted by the former British Prime Minister in 1943 as a gift for Franklin D. Roosevelt, the US President at that time. The painting - the only one Churchill finished during the second world war - is depicting a 12th-century Marrekash mosque in the sunset and it symbolizes the unique relationship between the two nations.
Winston Churchill has painted around 500 pictures as an impassioned amateur and this one also has historical significance being created after the allies accepted the “unconditional surrender” of Germany.
